Starting my freelance writing career

I've been wondering what I should be doing, I've been in college working on being an electronic engineer and I thought I might be doing that but after staying in school for a few years I can see it might not be the exact career choice I was looking for so I began doing research on jobs I can do online and I happen to learn about freelance writing.  It's a job where you are the boss and you can work at home as well and work as many hours as you see fit.  It's a big step in a direction I never thought I'd be doing since I've never really written for other people other than for my classes at school.  I'm hoping that I get the hang of freelance writing and earn a decent amount of income.
